Are you interested in getting started in raising Angora Goats or adding quality animals to your existing herd?

I am often asked about the best way to get started with Angora goats. Here are some different options that I recommend. Keep in mind that Angora goats are rarely happy by themselves. They are species specific and do best when in the company of at least one other Angora goat preferably from their own herd.

1. Wethers (castrated males) have certain advantages. They are less expensive ($150-$250) than registered stock, they are not affected by breeding urges and are generally very friendly. They keep their fine, lustrous locks for many years. If your main goal is to care for animals for their companionship and for their beautiful fiber or to see if Angora goats are for you, then wethers might be the right choice.

2. If you want to experience the birth of a kid, yet you don't want the hassle of a breeding buck on your farm, then purchasing a bred doe ($450 and up) might be the best solution. If you like, you can choose a doe before she is bred and then choose the sire that you think best compliments her. Or you can leave it up to me. I put the bucks in the with the does the third week in August and take them out the second week of November for kids to arrive between the end of January until the end of March. If you want kids born in April, I can accommodate a special breeding schedule. To reduce the risk of the doe losing her kid due to the stress of moving her to a new home, it is best to pick up the doe between two and four months of pregnancy.

3. Maybe you have done all your goat research, tightened the fences, and have a suitable shelter constructed and are ready to try your hand at breeding. I can help you select a non-related buck and doe or does (does $350 and up and bucks $400 and up) so you can begin your own breeding program.

4. Buying kids might work well for you. They are so cute and playful and easy to tame. One drawback is that there is no guarantee on how the kid will turn out. I can show you the dam and sire and make a reasonable prediction however. Kids also require more care their first year because they are more susceptible to parasites.
